• Wheat has a very important connection to the Battle of Huck’s Defeat. In July of 1780, Thomas Sumter sent his men home to bring in the wheat harvest. When Huck discovered this he decided to take advantage of the situation and arrest patriot leaders while they were at their homes.
• The Bratton Plantation (now Historic Brattonsville) was settled in 1766 by Col. William Bratton and his wife Martha, both strong supporters of the Patriot cause. In summer 1780, British forces under Capt. Christian Huck searched the plantation for Bratton, but Martha refused to reveal his location despite threats and was confined with her children. The next morning, Bratton’s militia ambushed and defeated Huck at the Battle of Williamson’s Plantation (Huck’s Defeat). After the war, Bratton operated a tavern at Brattonsville along the busy Charleston Road, now present day Brattonsville Road
