If you’ve spent any time in Rock Hill, South Carolina, chances are you’ve heard the buzz about the Black Hawk Ranch Rodeo. Tucked away just outside of town, this legendary spot is more than just a rodeo—it’s a living slice of local history and tradition.
A Ranch with Deep Roots
The story of Black Hawk Ranch began in 1961, when the McKee family laid the foundation for what would become a Rock Hill institution. Just a year later, in 1962, they hosted their very first rodeo. What started as a local event quickly grew into something much bigger, drawing in spectators and participants from all around the region. The McKees didn’t stop at rodeos—they also held horse shows, clinics, and a variety of equestrian events on the ranch grounds.
A New Chapter with the Melton Family
In 1986, the reins of Black Hawk Ranch were passed to the Melton family, who continued and expanded the ranch’s legacy. Known for raising Texas Longhorn cattle and American Quarter Horses, the Meltons brought new energy to the property while preserving its roots.
By 1989, the Meltons were hosting their own rodeos and horse shows, and the ranch was once again booming with activity. The smell of hay, the thrill of the arena, and the sound of hooves pounding the dirt became fixtures of the Rock Hill countryside.
