York County is raising the bar—literally—with the debut of its very first speakeasy, Elsie’s at Kounter. Opening December 13th nestled in the heart of Rock Hill, this gem is the brainchild of Chef Rob, inspired by his 98-year-old grandmother, Elsie. Offering prohibition-style cocktails with a modern twist, Elsie’s combines vintage charm with contemporary creativity. Get ready to whisper the secret password and step into Elsie's. A speakeasy with an unexpecting entrance, dim lighting, bold wallpaper, and high-end finishes. Named in honor of Masone’s grandmother, Elsie, the décor will feature keepsake items and personal memorabilia from Masone’s family including an heirloom piano which will provide live music. Elsie’s bar menu aims to feature a mix of classic and modern cocktails, along with non-alcoholic options and house-made elements, including dry ice, smoked cocktails and herbal infusions sourced from local vendors. A selection of small-bite, gourmet sweets will also be served.

“The goal is to bring a much-needed, elevated experience to Rock Hill’s Main Street,” I envision Kounter Lounge to be a space for upscale client meetings and that generates more foot traffic in downtown Rock Hill after typical dinner hours." Said Masone

Patrons will access the speakeasy through a 400-square-foot European-style cheese and charcuterie shop. This charming bodega will feature an Italian flywheel meat slicer with a striking cherry-red finish, perfectly complementing the iconic refrigerator at Chef Masone’s flagship restaurant, Kounter. Alongside a carefully curated selection of local goods, guests can indulge in delightful surprises, including their secretive menu item, Bread and Butter, available daily to elevate the shopping experience.

Meet Chef Rob Masone

Chef Rob at Elsie'sA York County native, Chef Rob Masone was born and raised in Rock Hill. Following many successful years as an Executive Chef throughout the Carolinas, Chef Masone ultimately planted roots in Rock Hill with the opening of Kounter. In addition to Kounter, Chef Masone owns and operates Kre8 Xperiences, a funky, full-service events and catering company. Chef Masone currently serves as a 2023 South Carolina State Chef Ambassador..
