Join us the first Tuesday of each month at 6:30pm from April to October for our brand new survival series! Learn some basic skills that will translate to a more comfortable outdoor experience whether you are starting a fire in your back yard or navigating the back country. We will cover topics from shelter building, to archery, to orienteering and more!
MONTHLY THEMES April 2 - Fire Starting - Rush Pavilion Did you know Doritos make a great fire starter? What about dryer lint? Join us as we learn a variety of ways to get a fire started under all sorts of conditions. We will cover fire safety, fire starting and the different firewood arrangements you can use to create the perfect campfire.
May 7 - Water Filtration - Nature Center Join us as we cover the array of water filtration techniques available – from life straws, to tablets, to solar water stills. We will show you how to use these options, and how to make them in some cases! We will talk about briefly about water quality and some tricks to finding water.
June 4 - Shelter Building - Nature Center One of the most dangerous elements of being outdoors – and often the one people are least prepared for – is exposure. In this class we will discuss how to dress for an outdoor trip but primarily we will learn about a variety of shelters, from tarps to creating something from scratch using surrounding natural objects. Most importantly, you will get to try your hand at building some of these shelters!
July 2 - Fish Traps - Nature Center Often fish are one of the easiest to find and catch foods. In this class we will explore a couple of different options for catching fish and you will even walk away with your very own hand-made fish trap or fishing rod!
August 6 - Basic Archery - Adventure Center Join us for a fun-filled evening of archery! This class will introduce you to the very basic of archery. This includes range safety, how an archery range is laid out, whistle commands, parts of a bow and arrow, and, of course, how to use a bow and arrow!
September 3 - Compass Orienteering - Adventure Center Using a compass is so much more than just knowing which way North is! Join us as we dive into the basics of using a compass. Finish up the evening by navigating our treasure map using your newfound compass skills to find the hidden treasure!
