Where in York County can you find a unique public art collection, architecturally significant historic buildings, premier art galleries, a Piedmont wetlands, and fabulous research, performance and athletics facilities? Nowhere but on the campus of Winthrop University, a distinctive public institution nestled in the heart of Rock Hill.
A city partner since 1895 when Winthrop relocated from Columbia, the university has grown from a single classroom in which public school teachers were trained to a comprehensive institution where students daily discover what it means to live, learn and lead the Winthrop way.
Visitors often comment that Winthrop looks just like a university should look. Indeed, the 100-acre main campus is one of Rock Hill’s five historic districts. Student ambassadors provide campus tours weekdays at 10am and 2pm, excluding holidays, exam periods, and official closings. Tours are arranged through the Winthrop Admissions and Visitors Center, 1-800-WINTHROP.
The center is located in historic Joynes Hall near Winthrop’s main entrance. The main floor offers an exhibit by Winthrop’s longtime photographer, Joel Nichols, while campus maps are available for self-guided tours.
Two other historic buildings -- Rutledge and McLaurin -- house the Winthrop University Galleries, regionally respected for the quality and diversity of its offerings. Exhibits and educational programs inform and enrich the community; plus, they are free and open to the public. Weekday hours are 9am-5pm. Check for holiday and summer hours by calling 803-323-2493.
Winthrop’s unique public art program features commissioned works as well as pieces by faculty, alumni and students. Their creations appear on the main campus and are featured at www.winthrop.edu/tour/publicart/.
