Region

York County, like the rest of South Carolina, was devastated by the Civil War. Many lives were lost; almost everyone was poor. The textile industry brought new life into the South. Factory work brought farmers to the cities where other businesses grew. York County became a business center for industry, communications, and technology.

In recent years Asian and Hispanic populations have enriched York County, creating a more diverse population. Tolerance and cooperation make York County a place where all people can feel at home.

York County is located in north central South Carolina in the Piedmont region below the Blue Ridge Mountains. York County is part of the Olde English Tourism District, in which many of the cities and counties were named after the settlers’ homes in England.
